mark batterson: session 1

mark batterson, pastor of national community church in washington dc kicked off echo conference’s first session and shared some really cool stuff:

  • we tend to try to reach people the way we were reached
  • movie theater screens are post-modern stained glass. people used to tell stories on stained glass, now they tell stories through moving pictures.
  • he used mathew 10:16 which says: “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.
  • i wonder if churches do to people what zoos do to animals.
  • there are 2 ways of doing ministry. 1) faking it. 2) from the overflow of God
  • it’s easy to learn how and forget why
  • truth is found in the tension of opposites. if you don’t feel tension in truth, I wonder if you are missing something.
  • twitter, facebook, and blogging are all new distribution channels to preach the gospel.
  • comparing yourself and others:You can only compare in two directions…comparing to someone you are better than leads to pride, and comparing to someone who is better than you leads to jealousy.
  • the greatest tragedy is when we start doing ministry out of memory (the way we have always done things) instead of ministry out of innovation
  • “i read business books to get church ideas. i dream of the day the business world reads church books to get ideas.”
  • we’re all preaching. preachers use words, media guys use pictures, and editing.
  • martin luther said the printing press was God’s highest act of grace to communicate the gospel. technology is the key to driving the gospel forward.
  • back in john wesley’s day, they used word of mouth to communicate the news. today we use word of “mouse.”
  • mark has preached in over 83 countries in the last year, all because of technology.
  • there are ways of doing church that no one has thought of yet

mark’s new book “wild goose chase” comes out next week and you should definitely check it out! and check out some pictures from session 1 HERE. some of this i had to copy from tim stevens because i couldn’t write fast enough. tomorrow i’ll live blog for sure, i know i type faster than i write.
